For this week's topic, let's look back all the way to elementary and middle school.
If you could advise one young legally blind student to use any piece of accessible technology, what would it be? Maybe think about something that you use now in high school or college that would have made things easier back in elemementary or middle school.
If you can't think of a technology, then what do you wish you knew when you were in grade school that you know now?

I remember my vision teacher introduced me to the Braille 'N Speak way back when I was in 4th grade. By the time I got to jr. high, it proved to be a definite blessing as I didn't have to lug a brailler around to each class. In college, I ended up switching over to a laptop because it centralized everything for me much better.
ReplyDeleteMy best advice is to learn how notetakers work and how computers work. If you have been exposed to both, you're more likely to be able to adapt to other sorts of operating systems such as PDA's and cell phones.
And let's not forget the usefulness of the slate and stylus. I still have one and do use it every once in a while. :)
